Yes, lions and tigers and bears! We're only kidding, except for the bears, which have been spotted on occasion. They're as scared of humans as we are of them. We also see the occasional coyote, deer, and groundhog. Additionally, we have a wide variety of birds to watch!
When you arrive, you'll notice a sign in the driveway prompting you to watch out for Bigfoot. We'll leave it up to you to decide if he's real or not!
There is a lot to see on the property, but we discourage hiking other than a short distance from the driveway. It's unfamiliar territory to guests and we would rather have you hike in the national forest area or many of the marked trails in and around Mountain View.
If you want to work your legs and burn a few calories, our driveway is 800' long and has an elevation change of 75' - 100'. It's like having a treadmill and a stairstepper all in one! A recent guest has informed us that it is 324 steps to the top of the driveway. Whew...

Situated in the Ozark Mountains of north-central Arkansas, Mountain View is an isolated community known for preserving traditional folk music and culture. It attracts thousands of visitors each year with attractions such as the Ozark Folk Center, Blanchard Springs Caverns, the White River, and the Ozark National Forest, as well as unique musical gatherings on the courthouse square.
The Gilded Age through the Early Twentieth Century
Before the Civil War, the area now known as Stone County was part of Izard County, with very few settlers. Stone County was formed in 1873, and Mountain View was established as the county seat through a drawing. The name “Mountain View” is believed to have been submitted by Elijah Chappell, Jacob King, or Calvin McMurtry. Incorporated in 1890, the town had its first mayor, William H. Rosa, in 1891. The population grew from 270 in 1891 to 2,748 in 2010. The town had three courthouses: a log structure, a two-story frame courthouse built in 1888, and the current stone building constructed in 1923.The Stone County Academy, erected in 1895, served up to 200 students by 1911-12. A water and sewer system was installed in 1937. The town experienced growth and hardships, including downtown fires in 1936 and 1946 and a devastating tornado in February 2008.
World War II through the Modern Era
Agriculture and timber were the main industries, but the town struggled to attract other industries due to its inaccessibility. Paving of roads outside Mountain View began only in the late 1960s and 1970s. In the 1960s, residents sought to attract visitors by capitalizing on their love of traditional mountain music. The first annual Arkansas Folk Festival was held in 1963, reviving the 1941 Stone County Folkways Festival. The Rackensack Society, formed by musician Jimmy Driftwood and others, held weekly gatherings. The Ozark Folk Center State Park opened in 1973, funded by federal money to build a music auditorium and water and sewer system. The Bean Fest, featuring the Great Arkansas Outhouse Race, was added in the 1980s. Today, Mountain View attracts thousands of tourists annually.
Famous Residents
Notable figures include folk musicians Jimmy Driftwood, known for “Battle of New Orleans” and “Tennessee Stud,” and Grandpa Jones, a regular on Hee Haw and the Grand Ole Opry. Actor Dick Powell's childhood home was on Main Street until its demolition in 2018.
